Grants for Ukrainian scholars and PhD-students to attend the EAJS Congress 2023

We recognize that our Ukrainian colleagues face unprecedented hardships and uncertainties due to the ongoing, barbaric invasion of their country by the armed forces of the Russian Federation. We understand that academic life at Ukrainian universities is severely affected by the war in general and by daily Russian attacks on civilian institutions and Ukraine's infrastructure in particular.

Nevertheless, we want to provide possibilities for Ukrainian scholars in the field of Jewish Studies to attend the twelfth EAJS Congress “Branching Out. Diversity of Jewish Studies", taking place in Frankfurt/Main (Germany) on July 16-20, 2023.

For this purpose, we offer grants for those who are able and willing to leave Ukraine at that time. (If the circumstances make in-person attendance impossible, we will find a way to organize hybrid sessions to provide Ukrainian colleagues with opportunities to attend the congress remotely, to connect with their international peers, and to present their research.) We sincerely hope that the situation by then will allow all interested colleagues in Ukraine to attend the congress.

The grants will be financed by donations and will cover almost all costs of attendance: congress fees will be waived; additionally, travel expenses and costs of accommodation will be covered. The organizing committee of the congress will take care of the booking of hotel rooms.

These grants are intended for Ukrainian scholars and PhD-students in Jewish studies, full or student members of the EAJS. Those that are currently living in Ukraine as well as those that left Ukraine after 24 February 2022 and don't yet have funding at their current place of work/residence will be considered first during the application process. Please fill in the application form and send it to congress@eajs-2023.eu until 31 January 2023.

The EAJS invites colleagues who have submitted panels to the 12th EAJS Congress in Frankfurt (deadline: 31 December 2022) to also apply for recognition of their panel as a Distinguished EAJS Panel or Distinguished EAJS Graduate Student Panel (deadline: 15 January 2023).

The criteria for selection are (a) academic excellence, (b) coherence of the proposed panel, (c) potential for scholarly innovation and (d) relation to the overall theme of the Congress “Diversity of Jewish Studies". Only panels accepted by the Congress Organising Committee will be considered. Also EAJS non-members can apply to this scheme provided the proposed panel meets the conditions outlined below.

Four Distinguished EAJS Panels were selected, and identified as such in the printed Congress programme.
